  • Abstract: Driven by the iron and steel industrial transformation policies, a significant number of ironworks brownfi elds have emerged in China. The ironworks brownfi eld distinctly embodies two dimensions of industrial culture, namely the material industrial culture and non-material dimensions, metaphorically representing the “bones” and “blood” of ironworks. The study interprets the industrial cultural connotations of ironworks from both material and non-material aspects through historical data analysis, archival research, and comparative case studies. Ironworks brownfi elds often occupy prime locations in cities, making their regeneration both important and urgent. Three effective regeneration strategies are summarized each from the rational cognition and emotional experience of industrial culture, which for the former are a holistic cognition of the ironworks’ complete lifecycle, a correlative cognition of the ironwork’s framework, and an element-based cognition that emphasize the monumentality of individual steel structures. The latter includes: recreating authentic emotional experiences of steel production scenes and stories; fostering commemorative emotional experiences related to steel workers’ identity; and encouraging reflective emotional experiences regarding the era of large-scale steel industrial production. Focusing on the perspective of “industrial culture” in steel plants, particularly the critical role of non-material industrial culture, this study provides referential insights for the future regeneration of steel-related industrial brownfields.
